Program Note for ReSonata (1985)
The title ReSonata is a play on words with (at least) three interpretations. Re, the solfegio syllable for the pitch D, suggests a sonata in that key. While this is not a work in any historic tonal style, an attempt was made to create a sense of tonal coherency and harmonic function suggestive of tradition, and focusing on D. The second suggestion is a reference to resonance, as resonant intervals dominate my choice of pitches. Finally, Re:Sonata. In approaching this piece I wanted to embrace the tradition of sonata form, and hopefully breath some new life into it.
This is the first, of what will eventually be three movements. ReSonata was written for Erika Duke, on commission from the National Association of Professional Music Teachers.
