program note:  The title Beacon refers first to Claire Chase - a light that brilliantly illuminates the musical world, and draws so many of us in to follow. It also refers to a beacon that sends out pings into the universe to attempt to find and communicate with intelligent life elsewhere, and when it finds it, transitions into an attempt to communicate through a language proposed some time ago by Varese, that then, finally, through a language that emerges from signals received in return.
