In Memoriam was composed in 1989 for the Aequalis Chamber Ensemble, on
commission from the Massachusetts Arts Council New Works Program.
Shortly after receiving the commission for this piece I heard the sad
news of Paul Fromm's death. I could think of nothing else but to write
a memorial work. Mr. Fromm was a great source of encouragement and
inspiration for American composers, and we are all eternally grateful
to him. As patron, scholar, and spokesman he was the most dedicated
advocate of the contemporary composer this country has ever seen. His
work lives on in the foundation that bears his name, and his spirit
lives on in the hundreds of compositions he inspired.
