program note:
Triton, the UC San Diego mascot, is a figure from Greek mythology. The son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, god and goddess of the sea, Triton is said to have lived at the bottom of the ocean, but he would rise above the surface to blow his conch shell. The huge, cacophonous sound that would raise the waves and frighten away the giants. As the UC San Diego community of Tritons rises up with this wonderful new venue, the story of Triton seemed to me an apt inspiration for my composition for this exciting occasion. Sixteen percussionists located around the amphitheater and in the verandas of adjacent buildings create an ocean of sound to accompany tonight's percussion soloist, Professor Steven Schick, at the center of the stage. Triton's Rise is dedicated to Dan and Phyllis Epstein, to thank them for their extraordinary generosity to UC San Diego and to honor their love of, and support for, music.
